Nurse Triage Services in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has not yet implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact, so triage for Massachusetts patients requires a Massachusetts license. PCTS RNs hold MA licenses and cover practices in Massachusetts after hours and during the day.

What Massachusetts practices need to know

Massachusetts has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact but has not yet implemented it. Until implementation is complete, a multistate license does not authorize triage for patients located in Massachusetts; a Massachusetts license is still required.

Practices across New England see patients from neighboring compact states such as New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and Berkshire County practices see New York patients, who need a New York license. A triage service has to cover each correctly.

PCTS RNs hold Massachusetts licenses, so coverage does not depend on when the compact takes effect. We will update this page when implementation is complete.

Nurse triage in Massachusetts: common questions

Is Massachusetts in the Nurse Licensure Compact?

Massachusetts has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact but has not yet implemented it, so a multistate license is not yet valid there. A Massachusetts license is required.

Do PCTS nurses hold MA licenses?

Yes. Calls from patients located in Massachusetts go to PCTS RNs licensed in Massachusetts. PCTS nurses are licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

What about our patients in neighboring states?

New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut are compact states; New York is not in the compact. PCTS routes every call to a nurse licensed where the patient is located, so patients on either side of the border are covered by the same service.
