Nurse Triage Services in New York

New York is not in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so triage for New York patients requires a New York license. PCTS RNs hold NY licenses and cover practices in New York after hours and during the day.

What New York practices need to know

New York is not in the Nurse Licensure Compact. Nurses are licensed through the New York State Education Department, and a multistate license does not authorize triage for patients located in New York.

For New York practices that is the whole question: the region's patients cross state lines constantly. A practice in New York City or the Hudson Valley may have patients who live in New Jersey or Connecticut, compact states, while their own New York patients need a New York-licensed nurse.

PCTS RNs hold New York licenses alongside compact licenses, so calls from New York patients and from neighboring states are covered by the same service.

Nurse triage in New York: common questions

Is New York in the Nurse Licensure Compact?

No. New York is not a Nurse Licensure Compact jurisdiction, so a multistate license does not authorize nursing practice there. A New York license is required.

Do PCTS nurses hold NY licenses?

Yes. Calls from patients located in New York go to PCTS RNs licensed in New York. PCTS nurses are licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

What about our patients in neighboring states?

New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Vermont are compact states; Massachusetts has enacted the compact but not yet implemented it. PCTS routes every call to a nurse licensed where the patient is located, so patients on either side of the border are covered by the same service.
